Product Details

8-5050 is a 50×50mm square aluminum profile from the European-standard 8 series (8mm slot width), 6063-T5 alloy, wall thickness 2.5mm, weight per meter 2.20kg/m, moment of inertia 17.80cm⁴. Within the 8 series it is"the grade that steps up"from medium-load to heavy-load: compared with 8-4040, its moment of inertia is 2.09 times, while weight per meter increases only 52% — among all stocked specifications, this jump delivers the most obvious efficiency gain, yet it is the most easily underestimated.

Why the jump from 40 to 50 deserves to be called out on its own

If you work through the stocked 8-series specifications by"how much stiffness you get per kilogram", a clear step appears:

SpecificationWeight per meterMoment of inertiaStiffness / weight ratioStiffness relative to 8-4040
8-30300.85 kg/m3.20 cm⁴3.760.38×
8-40401.45 kg/m8.52 cm⁴5.881.00×
8-4040B1.80 kg/m10.20 cm⁴5.671.20×
8-50502.20 kg/m17.80 cm⁴8.092.09×
8-60603.20 kg/m36.00 cm⁴11.254.23×

The key takeaway:8-4040B thickening only drags efficiency down (5.88 → 5.67), whereas switching 8-5050 to a larger cross-section actually raises efficiency to 8.09.When it comes to"adding material", putting it into cross-section height is far more cost-effective than putting it into wall thickness.

Five signs that you should upgrade from 8-4040 to 8-5050

  • Uprights exceed 1.2m in height, with offset loads hanging off the top. Once the height goes up, stability and bending resistance must be recalculated; the 40 profile has no margin left.
  • The equipment has start-stop shocks or continuous vibration. Under dynamic conditions deformation is amplified versus static, and the margin of 8-4040 gets eaten away.
  • The main frame footprint exceeds 1.5m. As the footprint grows, beam spans increase, and the whole structure easily goes"soft".
  • Long-term positioning accuracy must be maintained. The accuracy of an aluminum profile frame relies on rigidity; 8.52cm⁴ cannot hold the repeatability of a high-precision platform.
  • Heavy parts must be mounted at a single node. When gearboxes, servo motors and heavy fixtures hang directly on the profile, local compression and bending resistance must each step up a grade.

Conversely, if you just"want a bit more stability"without being able to name a specific load case, usually adding a few supports to 8-4040 is enough; there is no need to upgrade the whole machine.

Typical uses for 8-5050

  • Main frames of mid-size equipment: for equipment with an outer envelope of 1.5–3m, use 8-5050 for uprights and top/bottom frames, while internal supports can still use 8-4040.
  • Uprights of conveyor-line frames: when the line is long, upright loading is complex, and the 50 profile is a common configuration.
  • Load-bearing bases for automated workstations: when heavy parts sit under the tabletop, a base in 8-5050 is more reassuring.
  • Outer frames around robots: the outer frame that reserves mounting space for a robot must satisfy both rigidity and mounting-surface accuracy.
  • Pairing with 8-4080: uprights in 8-5050 and beams in 8-4080 is a common combination for"long spans where uprights cannot be added".

Accessories and delivery

All four faces have 8mm standard slots and share the same accessory system as 8-4040 — angle brackets, connecting plates, end caps and casters are all interchangeable; this is the most convenient part of upgrading:no need to change accessory suppliers or re-stock spares..

It should be noted that the 8mm slot is not interchangeable with the 6 series (6mm) or 10 series (10mm). If a project also uses 10-series profiles, accessories must be kept separate by series.

Stocked inventory, standard length 6.02m, sold from 1 meter, cutting accuracy ±0.5mm, can be cut to drawings; drilling, tapping and slot milling can be requested together. Production in Qingpu, Shanghai; delivery within Shanghai city.

FAQ

Can 8-5050 directly replace 8-4040 as uprights?

Yes, but connectors must be confirmed. The outer dimensions differ, so angle brackets and connecting plates must be adjusted accordingly; the slot width is the same (8mm), so T-slot nuts and accessories can continue to be used.

Which is worth it between 8-5050 and 8-4040B?

It depends on the goal. If you want overall stiffness → 8-5050 (17.80 vs. 10.20cm⁴, nearly 1.75×); if it is just that there are many local holes needing tapping and frequent assembly/disassembly → 8-4040B. Thickening is not reinforcement.

Won't the 50 profile be too heavy for a frame?

Weight per meter is 2.20kg/m, 0.75kg/m higher than 8-4040. For a 3m-square frame, the extra weight from uprights and framing material is usually acceptable, and in return rigidity doubles — unless the equipment is sensitive to self-weight, it is not a bad deal.

What is the difference between 8-5050 and 10-5050?

Both have a 50×50 cross-section; the difference is in slot width and wall thickness: 8-5050 has an 8mm slot, 2.5mm wall and moment of inertia 17.80cm⁴; 10-5050 has a 10mm slot, 3.5mm wall and moment of inertia 22.00cm⁴. Stiffness differs by only 24%, but weight differs by 59%.You choose the 10 series mainly for accessory load capacity and tapping margin, not for stiffness..

Is it in stock?

It is a stocked specification, 6.02m fixed length, cut as needed, sold from 1 meter.
