Product Details

8-4080 is a 40×80mm rectangular-section conveyor-line profile of the European standard series 8 (slot width 8mm),in 6063-T5 alloy, with wall thickness 2.5mm, weight per meter 2.80kg/m, and a moment of inertia of 39.00cm⁴ in the 80mm height direction. What it solves is"the problem of long spans where no post can be added in the middle"for that kind of cross beam: where another member could also hold up, using this profile saves material compared with a 60×60 square tube, and it is shorter in height, taking up less vertical space.

The directionality of a rectangular section: orientation matters more than size

The stiffness of 8-4080 in its two directions differs greatly. The moment of inertia is 39.00cm⁴ in the 80mm height direction, but markedly lower in the 40mm width direction—the same piece, placed vertically versus horizontally, has a bending resistance of a completely different order.

There is only one rule of thumb:place the 80mm dimension along the bending direction. When used as a cross beam, stand the 80mm vertically for maximum bending resistance; when 8-4080 is laid flat as a tread plate, cover plate, or cable-tray floor, the load direction shifts to the 40mm side, so the span must be shortened accordingly—do not simply carry over the span used for the vertical orientation.

This must be decided at the drawing stage. Many on-site reworks happen not because the specification was chosen too small, but because the rectangular stock was rotated 90 degrees during assembly.

How to choose among neighboring specifications

Among the European standard series 8, the three specifications 40×40, 40×80, and 60×60 are the easiest to choose wrong; the difference is not"one size up", but in the different loading modes brought by the cross-section shape.

SpecificationCross-sectionWall thicknessWeight per meterMoment of inertiaTypical positioning
8-404040×402.0mm1.45 kg/m8.52 cm⁴General worktables, safety guard frames
8-4040B40×402.5mm1.80 kg/m10.20 cm⁴Same size thickened, many holes, requires higher rigidity
8-408040×802.5mm2.80 kg/m39.00 cm⁴(80mm direction)Long-span cross beams, conveyor load-bearing beams
8-606060×603.0mm3.20 kg/m36.00 cm⁴Heavy-load frames, columns, robot bases
10-459045×903.0mm4.50 kg/m58.00 / 15.50 cm⁴Heavy cross beams (series 10, different accessory series)

The decision order can go like this:

  • Span under 1m, load distributed → 8-4040 is enough, no need for rectangular stock.
  • Span 1–2m, no post can be added in the middle, and clear height is tight → 8-4080. For the same stiffness level, it is about 12% lighter than 8-6060 and saves 20mm of height.
  • Hanging points needed on all sides, load direction not fixed → 8-6060. The square section is isotropic, giving more freedom for connection points.
  • Span over 2m, or 8-4080 already deflects noticeably → move to 10-4590 / 10-9090A, or add the columns back.

Where 8-4080 is typically used

  • Conveyor load-bearing beams: two longitudinal beams span the middle section, leaving maintenance and cable-routing space below—this is its most typical use.
  • Cross beams for gantries and trusses: columns are fixed and the beam must span across; the 40mm width takes up no space, while the 80mm height resists bending.
  • Robot seventh-axis base: the base must be long and straight; rectangular stock controls overall deflection better than a square tube of the same weight.
  • Top cross-braces of large safety guards: long span but light load; using 8-4080 controls sag without adding a middle post.
  • Lower support for equipment platforms: when the platform itself uses steel plate or sheet, 8-4080 as the bottom longitudinal beam has fewer splice points than multiple rows of 8-4040.

Accessories, cutting and delivery

8-4080 has standard 8mm slots on all four sides; European standard series 8 connectors, T-nuts, angle brackets, and end caps can all be used directly, with no need for special accessories. Note that series 6 (slot width 6mm) and series 10 (slot width 10mm) accessories and the series 8are not interchangeable, so confirm which slot-width system the site uses before selecting.

Profiles are regularly stocked in standard length 6.02m, sold from 1 meter. They can be cut to specified length per drawings with cutting accuracy ±0.5mm; supported processing such as drilling, tapping, and notch milling can be specified when ordering. Origin is Qingpu, Shanghai, and on-site delivery is available within Shanghai.

If your scenario is rails, load-bearing guide rails, and similar components subject to long-term reciprocating force, we do not recommend selecting by conveyor-line profile specs directly—the two are tested differently for loading; see below for the specific boundary"related content"in that article.

FAQ

What is the difference between 8-4080 and 8-4040?

The difference is in section height and wall thickness. 8-4040 is 40×40 with wall thickness 2.0mm, weight per meter 1.45kg/m, and moment of inertia 8.52cm⁴; 8-4080 is 40×80 with wall thickness 2.5mm, weight per meter 2.80kg/m, and moment of inertia 39.00cm⁴ in the 80mm direction—its bending resistance is about 4.6 times that of 8-4040, while the weight per meter increases by less than a factor of two. Once the span grows, 8-4040 needs posts added to cope, whereas 8-4080 often runs in one piece.

How to choose between 8-4080 and 8-6060?

Depends on space and load direction. 8-4080 is flatter (80 high, 40 wide), and at 2.80kg/m it is about 12% lighter than 8-6060's 3.20kg/m, so it is preferred for cross-beam positions with restricted 800mm clear height; 8-6060 is a 60×60 square symmetric section with consistent stiffness on all sides, suitable for columns and nodes needing multi-directional connections. Their moments of inertia are close (39.00 vs 36.00), so choosing wrong does not affect strength—only assembly and space occupation.

Can 8-4080 be used as a column?

We do not recommend using it alone as a tall column. A column's main failure direction falls on the 40mm side, where 8-4080 does not have the advantage. For columns, prefer 8-6060 or 10-9090A; reserve 8-4080 for cross beams and longitudinal beams.

Can it be cut, drilled, and tapped?

Yes. Cutting accuracy is ±0.5mm, with length cut to drawings; drilling, tapping, slot milling, and other processing can be requested at order time, and machined parts are shipped directly to the site for assembly.

Can series 8 accessories be mixed with series 6 or series 10?

No. The slot widths of the three series are 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm respectively, with different nut and angle bracket dimensions; mixing them will result in failure to fit or play. 8-4080 is only paired with series 8 accessories.
