Product Details

8-4040B is a 40x40mm reinforced profile of the European standard 8 series (slot width 8mm), wall thickness 2.5mm (ordinary 8-4040 is 2.0mm), weight per meter 1.80kg/m, moment of inertia 10.20cm⁴. Its value is not"overall stiffness"- stiffness is only 20% higher than 8-4040 while weight is 24% higher - but injoints that must keep the 40mm square outline yet withstand dense drilling and repeated assembly/disassembly. Trying to solve overall rigidity problems with it is usually the wrong direction.

First look at the data: the stiffness gained from reinforcement versus the weight paid

SpecificationWall ThicknessWeight per MeterMoment of InertiaStiffness / Weight Ratio
8-40402.0mm1.45 kg/m8.52 cm⁴5.88
8-4040B2.5mm1.80 kg/m10.20 cm⁴5.67
8-50502.5mm2.20 kg/m17.80 cm⁴8.09

The conclusion of this table is somewhat counter-intuitive:the reinforced version's"stiffness per kilogram"is actually slightly lower than the original(5.67 vs 5.88), while switching to the larger 8-5050 raises efficiency by 38% directly.

The reason is simple: moment of inertia is mainly determined by cross-section height; thickening only adds material without adding height. So:

  • To getoverall stiffness -> switch to a larger cross-section (8-5050) or change the shape (8-4080).
  • To getlocal durability -> use 8-4040B; this is its true place.

The four places where 8-4040B truly belongs

  • Tapped connection faces: where M8 threads must be tapped directly on the profile end face or slot bottom; 2.5mm wall gives more complete thread turns than 2.0mm and is less prone to thread stripping.
  • Frequently assembled/disassembled joints: equipment that is repeatedly moved and modified will have connection holes enlarged over time; the reinforced profile has more margin.
  • High bolt preload areas: heavy-load connections need higher preload; thin walls will collapse or deform locally.
  • Dense side-hole areas: after a row of holes, the 2.0mm wall leaves little material, while 2.5mm still retains enough cross-section.

Conversely, in the following cases you shouldnotuse 8-4040B:

  • just because you feel the"overall stiffness is not enough"- switching to 8-5050 is more cost-effective;
  • large crossbeam spans needing sag control - the 39.00cm⁴ of 8-4080 is the right tool;
  • the frame itself does not bear load and is only a panel skeleton - 8-3030 is enough, don't spend extra weight.

Fittings and Delivery

8-4040B is identical to 8-4040 in outline and slot width (both 8-series 8mm slots),and the fittings are interchangeable- this is its most practical point: the same set of angle brackets, connection plates and end caps works on both profiles, so spares need not be kept in two sets.

Regular stock, standard length 6.02m, sold from 1 meter. Cutting accuracy ±0.5mm, cut to drawings; drilling, tapping, slotting and other machining can be noted when ordering. Produced in Qingpu, Shanghai; delivery within Shanghai city is available.

FAQ

Is 8-4040B much stronger than 8-4040?

Stiffness is only 20% higher (10.20 vs 8.52cm⁴), weight is 24% higher."Stronger"if it means bending resistance, the gain is limited; if it means connection joints that endure rework and tapping without stripping, the gain is real. It depends on where your problem lies.

Can 8-4040B replace 8-5050?

Not recommended. The moment of inertia of 8-5050 is 17.80cm⁴, 1.75 times that of 8-4040B, while weight per meter is only 0.40kg/m higher. Since you are already adding material, you might as well enlarge the cross-section directly.

Can 8-4040B and 8-4040 be mixed?

Yes. Both have the same cross-section outline and slot width, and the fittings are interchangeable; locally reinforcing joints with the B version within the same frame is a common practice and does not affect assembly.

Is the B version in stock?

Yes, it is a regular stock size, 6.02m fixed length, cut on demand, sold from 1 meter.
