Product Details
8-4040 is an European-standard 8-series (groove width 8mm) 40×40mm square-section aluminum profile, 6063-T5 alloy, wall thickness 2.0mm, weight per meter 1.45kg/m, moment of inertia 8.52cm⁴. It is the most widely used general specification in the 8-series and the default starting point for the vast majority of equipment frames: the most complete accessories, the fullest stock and the most machining experience. When unsure which specification to use, start by drawing up the design with 8-4040, then make local adjustments to specific load-bearing positions - more efficient than agonizing over the specification from scratch.
Why 40×40 became the default specification
Not because it is the strongest, but because it lands best between"good enough"and"no waste":
- Stiffness sufficient for most static frames: with a moment of inertia of 8.52cm⁴, standard-size equipment frames, worktables and protective guards are fine even without calculation.
- Most complete accessory ecosystem: angle brackets, connecting plates, hinges, casters, leveling feet, cable-trunking clips; among the 8-series, the 40-square has the widest variety of matching parts and is easiest to buy for emergency replenishment.
- High assembly tolerance: 40mm square, hex keys fit in, nuts are easy to place, and repeated assembly/disassembly is unlikely to strip the threads.
- Smooth transition with adjacent specifications: stepping down to 8-3030 or up to 8-5050 or 8-4040B, with common transition parts.

Position of 8-4040 in the specification family
Arranging the regular 8-series specifications by moment of inertia, 8-4040 sits just below the middle, marking the dividing line of the"good-enough tier":
| Specification | Cross-Section | Weight per Meter | Moment of Inertia | Relative to 8-4040 | Positioning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8-3030 | 30×30 | 0.85 kg/m | 3.20 cm⁴ | 0.38x | Small frames, panel frames |
| 8-4040 | 40×40 | 1.45 kg/m | 8.52 cm⁴ | 1.00x | Equipment main-frame baseline |
| 8-4040B | 40×40 | 1.80 kg/m | 10.20 cm⁴ | 1.20x | Thicker wall at same size, more holes |
| 8-5050 | 50×50 | 2.20 kg/m | 17.80 cm⁴ | 2.09x | Medium-heavy load, large-span columns |
| 8-6060 | 60×60 | 3.20 kg/m | 36.00 cm⁴ | 4.23x | Heavy-load frames, robot bases |
| 8-4080 | 40×80 | 2.80 kg/m | 39.00 cm⁴ (80mm direction) | 4.58x | Large-span beams |
Two things can be read from this table:
- If you feel 8-4040 is not enough, first ask whether it is"overall insufficient"or"insufficient in one direction". If overall insufficient, move up to 8-5050; if only one direction is insufficient and you are limited to 40mm width, use 8-4080.
- From 8-4040 to 8-4040B, stiffness rises only 20%, yet weight per meter rises 24%.If you simply want to increase rigidity, going larger beats thickening the wall.
Typical uses of 8-4040
- Equipment main frame: four columns + top and bottom frames, the most conventional approach, using angle brackets and connecting plates.
- Worktables and assembly tables: under the tabletop, 8-4040 serves as longitudinal and transverse beams, with a steel plate or anti-static plate on top.
- Protective guards and safety fences: columns of 8-4040, panels made of wire mesh or acrylic - the most common combination in the industry.
- Frames on both sides of conveyor lines: when the line is short, the whole unit uses 8-4040; once the line gets long, switch the longitudinal beams to 8-4080.
- Aluminum-profile linear-module bases: the rigidity of 8-4040 is sufficient for modules with small-to-medium strokes; when the stroke increases, the base must be upgraded.
When to move beyond the 40-square
- Span exceeds 1m and columns cannot be added → 8-4080 or 10-4590; don't expect to pile up 8-4040 in numbers.
- Equipment subject to continuous vibration or impact → start at 8-5050; dynamic rigidity must be marginally reserved for the worst-case condition.
- Column height exceeds 1.5m with eccentric load at the top → 8-6060 or 10-9090A; consider stability and bending resistance together.
- Need to maintain positioning precision long-term → move up one tier; the precision of an aluminum-profile frame is held up by rigidity, and insufficient rigidity cannot be tuned back.
Accessories, Cutting and Delivery
All four sides have standard 8mm grooves, compatible with European-standard 8-series accessories.6-series (6mm) and 10-series (10mm) accessories are not interchangeable with 8-series; mixing them will cause them not to fit or to rattle; when crossing series in a project, keep separate spare parts.
The profile is in regular stock, standard length 6.02m, sold from 1 meter. It can be cut to drawings, with cutting accuracy ±0.5mm; drilling, tapping, notch milling and other processing can be requested together with the order. Origin: Qingpu, Shanghai; delivery within Shanghai city is available.
FAQ
What is the difference between 8-4040 and 8-4040B?
Wall thickness. 8-4040 is 2.0mm, weight per meter 1.45kg/m, moment of inertia 8.52cm⁴; 8-4040B is 2.5mm, weight per meter 1.80kg/m, moment of inertia 10.20cm⁴. Stiffness increases only 20%, while weight increases 24%, so the B version suits"nodes that must use the 40-square but require many holes", and is not suitable for overall reinforcement.
How much weight can 8-4040 bear?
Load capacity depends on span, support method, and whether the load points are concentrated or distributed; a single number is meaningless. You can provide the frame drawings and we will give advice based on the actual structure; generally, 8-4040 is safe for static equipment frames with conventional spans, and should be recalculated when there are explicit load requirements.
Are 8-4040 and the 6-series 40×40 interchangeable?
They look alike, but the groove widths differ (6mm vs 8mm), and the accessories are completely non-interchangeable. If the site already has 6-series accessories, switching to 8-series profiles requires replacing the accessories as well.
For building a frame, should I use 8-4040 or 8-4080?
It depends on the span and direction. If all four sides need hanging parts and the span is within 1m, 8-4040 is simpler; use 8-4080 only when the beam span is large and you do not want to add a middle column (moment of inertia in the 80mm direction is 39.00cm⁴, 4.58x that of 8-4040).
Is 8-4040 in stock, and how soon can it ship?
It is a regular stock specification, available in 6.02m fixed-length stock, cut to order and sold from 1 meter. Cut and simply processed parts are usually arranged for shipping after drawings are confirmed; the exact time is confirmed by order volume.
Can 8-4040 serve as a guide-rail mounting surface?
For short strokes and light loads, yes; for long-term reciprocating motion requiring precision, we do not recommend using the aluminum-profile groove surface directly as the guide-rail datum. For such scenarios, first confirm whether straightness and rigidity are sufficient, or add steel guide-rail mounts.
